This session will be presented by Christopher Barber, who is an author of ‘Autism and Asperger’s Condition: A practical guide for nurses’, and ‘Learning Disabilities: a non- specialist introduction for Nursing, Health and Social Care’.
If you have ever worked with an autistic person and wondered how to better support that person, welcome!
If you have ever felt daunted about how best to support autistic people within health care environments, welcome!
If you are autistic and would like to support those who are ‘neurotypical’ within health care environments, welcome!
This session will focus on a range of issues pertinent to supporting a person with autism within a number of health care environments. These issues will include:
- What autism is and is not
- Autistic statistics
- Autistic language explained
- Autism and mental health
- Autism and physical health
- Reasonable adjustments within health care environments: the autistic as patient or service user
- Reasonable adjustments within health care environments: the autistic as colleague
There will be opportunities for questions at the end of the session.
After the learning event concludes, there will be a branch meeting to discuss the outcomes from RCN Congress 2024 and what activities the branch has been involved in to support its members. There will be time to ask questions in this meeting.
All RCN members are welcome at this learning event, including Healthcare Assistants, Healthcare Support Workers, Trainee Nursing Associates and Nursing Associates, as well as all other RCN members who do not hold an NMC Pin.
